Coroner Pam Gay said 24-year-old Jessica Mellinger, of New Freedom, was killed by a gunshot wound to her chest. She said 24-year-old John R. Snyder, who lived in the home, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Mellinger’s death was ruled a homicide, and Snyder’s death was ruled a suicide. York Area Regional Police Sgt. Jeff Dunbar said Mellinger tried to flee Snyder’s home at 525 S. Franklin St. after a domestic dispute. She got into a car with Snyder’s stepmother and stepbrother, but could not start the vehicle. Dunbar said Snyder then came out of the house with a shotgun, shot his girlfriend while she was in the vehicle, and dragged her into the home. Police arrived at approximately 11 p.m. and soon came under gunfire from the home. During a period of more than an hour, numerous shots were fired from the residence and at one point, one of the officers returned fire, police said. The York County Quick Response Team was notified and responded to the scene. After several hours, at approximately 4:30 a.m., officers were able to enter the home and found Mellinger and Snyder dead.
